Heart of the Matter, by Ifeanyi Menkiti

It is the vital deprivation

Of the underdeveloped countries

That they do not have factories

For the manufacture of chewing gum

Nor grandstands for Coca-Cola dispensation.

Ifeanyi Menkiti is a Nigerian poet. I took the poem from Wole Soyinka’s Poems of Black Africa.
