My reading group reads books from developing countries, and after Purple Hibiscus (Nigerian novel dealing with domestic violence) and A Thousand Splendid Suns (takes place in Afghanistan, again with lots of domestic violence), everyone is desperate for something upbeat.
Can anyone recommend any upbeat development fiction? (Besides the Ladies’ No 1 Detective Agency?)
You know, I just had a look through all of the books I have read from developing countries, and none could be considered “upbeat”. I have read a few from India that aren’t depressing, however. Red Earth and Pouring Rain by Vikram Chandra is a great book, and a fun read, although a lengthy one.
And I have read a wonderful, entertaining book called I Am A Cat by Soseki Natsume from Japan, but that is not a developing country.
